The wines of Central Upland Croatia (Bregovita Hrvatska, the country’s continental hill country) have reached a quality that opens the doors of Croatia’s finest restaurants. On this, restaurateurs, sommeliers, beverage distributors and winemakers all agreed at the Wine Gala Bregovite Hrvatske gathering held at the Mano2 restaurant.
Zagreb’s dining scene is developing by leaps and bounds, and the winemakers of Central Upland Croatia have plenty to offer it. The wines of this region are still under-represented in Zagreb’s restaurants, wine shops and other points of sale. It is time to right that wrong, said sommelier Darko Lugaric.
We wanted to convey the breadth of our wines and the diversity of their styles. Our wines draw on global trends; we use new technology and oenological know-how, yet they are also a reflection of our terroir and of our winemakers’ creativity. Our wines are most often described as light and lively, but with this event we wanted to show that they can rise even to the greatest challenges that contemporary gastronomy sets before them. We presented our wealth of sparkling wines, wines from the indigenous Skrlet and Pusipel varieties, whites from aromatic international varieties, and striking reds. We rounded it all off with the story of our predikat (late-harvest) wines, said Miroslav Polovanec, president of the Bregovita Hrvatska Winegrowers and Winemakers Association.
