Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling (Graševina) and Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) are the most widely planted varieties in Steiermark (Styria), the Austrian wine region closest to us, which extends across Slovenian Styria into Croatia’s Međimurje. The climate is similar, so is the range of grapes, and there is also Riesling and Furmint, which the people of Međimurje fondly call Pušipel. Styrian wines, too, are fruity, lively and easy to drink. Eight Styrian wineries are heading to Zagreb for Austrian Wines Meet Croatia on 26 February at the Westin hotel, six of them from South Styria. The Peter Masser winery from Leutschach has more than 20 labels, among them five still Sauvignons priced from 11.50 to 56 euros. Something for everyone… 
The world’s best Sauvignon comes from Gamlitz, they boast at the Skoff Original winery. And they have some right to it: in 2017 their 2015 Sauvignon won the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon in Bordeaux. Graševina, Yellow Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Morillon, Riesling… are the other varieties from which they make wine, but their favourite, Sauvignon, is bottled under roughly a dozen labels. Sauvignon is also the passion of the team at the Hannes Sabathi winery in Gamlitz. The finest carries the Alte Reben (old vines) mark, from 2019, and costs 51 euros; their other wines are hardly cheap either, with a bottle under 20 euros hard to find. Gamlitz is also home to Domaine Wolf, a winery whose best wines — for example the Blaufränkisch (Frankovka) 2017 — reach 180 euros. More affordable are the Chardonnay Ried Hoch Sernau Reserve 2019 and the Chardonnay Ried Steinbach Reserve 2018, priced around 70 euros. 
The Gerhard Wohlmut winery comes to Zagreb from Fresing. It offers a wealth of whites and reds priced between 15 and 20 euros, several whites at 30, while its finest Riesling and Sauvignon from the Edelschuh site are a round 60 euros. The biodynamic Kögl winery is from Ratsch an der Weinstraße, right on the Slovenian border. They have 19 wines. Among them are a vermouth, three pét-nats and three Welschriesling (Graševina) bottlings priced between 11 and 25 euros. From the reds they offer Zweigelt and Pinot Noir, while their flagships are Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc at 35 euros. 
Weinschloss Thaller is a family wine castle in Maierhofen in Volcanic Styria (Vulkanland Steiermark). This is a tiny sub-region where the vineyards sit on the slopes of former volcanoes, which makes the landscape beautiful and the wines strikingly mineral. They pride themselves on aromatic Traminers, while their other significant varieties are Welschriesling (Graševina), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Sauvignon Blanc. From Hof bei Straden, also in Volcanic Styria, the Krispel winery is coming to Zagreb, growing Chardonnay, Yellow Muscat, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt.
