Sunny weather, good music and a rich food-and-wine offering drew a large crowd to yet another edition of Novljanski gušti, the event with which Novi Vinodolski traditionally bids farewell to summer. Eleven hospitality establishments took part: the konoba taverns Navigare, Pod Orajom and Hata, the Admiral restaurant, the Tomas bistro, the Đir bistro-pizzeria, the Adria buffet, the Aminess Lišanj hotel, Ekskluziva d.o.o., the Marnie café-bar-bistro, and Vinska kuća Pavlomir, which rounded out the offering with a drop of superb wines and sparkling wines.
On the menu was everything the heart could wish for: from squid salad in the coastal style and tuna pâté, through langoustines and mussels na buzaru, weever in sauce with polenta, cuttlefish from the pot, and anchovy brodetto with chickpeas and polenta, all the way to medallions of Adriatic prawns in a sparkling-wine sauce with orange risotto and braised squid with broad beans and polenta. Meat lovers savoured pljukanci pasta with beef goulash, Ukrainian cabbage rolls with buckwheat and beef, and Hungarian pörkölt. The sweet side of the offering included millefoglie, ricotta with figs, tiramisu, crêpes, homemade pies and strudels — among them a special fig strudel — and, for those with a sweet tooth, the popular Ukrainian Medovik cake.
Prices suited everyone. Gastronomic delicacies cost five euros, desserts three, and a glass of wine or sparkling wine two euros. The klapa ensemble Intriga provided the coastal atmosphere, while host Boris Novaković introduced the chefs and their culinary creations. Novljanski gušti once again confirmed that good company, superb food, a glass of wine and pleasant music are the best recipe for the end of summer. Those who came will surely return, and those who did not — let them mark the date now for next year, say the organisers from the Tourist Board of Novi Vinodolski.
