Organised by the “Wine in the Tradition of Living” Friends’ Society and with the support of the Municipality of Blato, another successful Wine Night (Vinska noc) was held in Blato, an event that increasingly establishes this town as an important stop on Dalmatia’s wine map. The gathering drew numerous winemakers, visitors and tourists who, in Blato’s authentic setting, had the chance to taste the wines of some 50 producers; alongside the Korcula vintners, guests from Peljesac, Lastovo, Hvar and Imotski also exhibited.
Special attention was paid to the indigenous varieties Posip, Cetinka, Grk and Plavac Mali, which form the backbone of the island of Korcula’s wine tradition. The quality of the wines on show was a pleasant surprise, not only from renowned vintners but also from many lesser-known producers offering excellent wines that clearly revealed the hand of the profession as well as a fine understanding of the varieties and of terroir specifics.
Cetinka thus proved that, despite its slender frame, it can be thrilling when its strengths are properly brought out, above all its delicacy, high freshness and aromatics. The Posips showed how, despite their recognisable varietal character, they are largely shaped by site, even the micro-locations of the vineyards, as well as by the different stylistic forms in which we find them. Grk demonstrated power, a firm stance and structure, yet also elegance, and it is especially heartening that the variety is being planted more and more.
The Plavci, Plavine and other red varieties richly enriched this night of wine, but it is important to stress that the true stars were nonetheless the wines from Posip, Cetinka and Grk. Alongside the tastings, visitors enjoyed local gastronomic specialities such as fresh oysters and prsut (dry-cured ham), as well as a musical programme that added to the warm, garden-like atmosphere. Beyond promoting wine, the aim of the event was to strengthen the bond between the local community and its many guests and the island’s wine tradition.
The organisers expressed satisfaction with the strong turnout, noting that interest in indigenous wines and events of this kind is continually growing. Once again this year, Wine Night in Blato confirmed itself as an important cultural and oenological event, with the potential to develop further towards sustainable tourism and the promotion of local identity.
