Rizvanac from the Cmrečnjak winery, the Silvanac Zeleni of the Novak, Štampar and Knehtl-Medenjak wineries, the Pinot Blanc of the Horvat winery, the Chardonnay of the Kovač winery, the aromatic cuvée of the Kunčić family and the Graševina of the Preiner winery are the eight wines of this year’s vintage that Međimurje’s vintners have presented under the Mlado (Young) label. Each carries the character of the vineyard, and of the winemaker who nurtured it, from which it comes, and all share the common stamp of Međimurje terroir. These are honest, fresh wines full of life, just like the region they come from, the vintners proudly note, adding that their shared story can be heard at the Pušipel World Centre in Štrigova, dedicated to the wine tradition of Croatia’s northernmost region.
The Centre is housed in the Štrigova House of Culture and is not a conventional wine shop or museum, but a contemporary interpretation centre that uses interactive content and various thematic sections to present the region’s viticultural history, its varieties, the particularities of its soils and microclimate, and the work of the winemakers who shape the wine. The emphasis is on Pušipel, as Međimurje calls the variety otherwise known as Moslavac or Furmint, which has become a symbol of the region’s quality and identity. The Centre unites tradition, modernity and tourism, helping visitors to better understand and more fully experience the Međimurje region.
Admission is free, the space is accessible to people with disabilities, and it also houses a sales corner with a wide selection of Međimurje wines and local products. A visit to the Pušipel World Centre is also the perfect introduction to exploring the Međimurje Wine Road. This wine route links more than 20 family wineries, tasting rooms and farms that lovingly guard tradition and craft wines of world-class standard. And one should certainly also visit the beautiful vineyards on Mađerka Hill and climb the lookout from which the view opens onto five countries: Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Croatia.
