There was everything on the laden table of the “Evening of Srijem and Slavonia” outside Crotaste — the House of Croatian Food — in Zagreb’s Cesarčeva Street: from poderane gaće fritters (fried “torn knickers” pastry), kulen and sausages, cheeses and bread with lard, to exquisite poppy-seed and lard rolls. Čvarci (pork crackling) were being rendered, carp was roasting on forked spits, tamburica players played, and toasts were raised with the finest wines of the Srijem vineyard district. Attractive September events in Vukovar-Srijem County were presented too.
From 5 to 7 September the Ilok Grape Harvest awaits you, and on 7 September the Stanari Gatherings in Babina Greda, an event showing how life once was in Srijem and Slavonia. From 12 to 21 September come the Vinkovci Autumn festivities, with the most spectacular part from 19 to 21 September. Sports fans will also enjoy the 11th Triathlon of the Rivers and Trails of Srijem in the municipality of Nijemci on 20 September. At the end of the month, from 26 to 28 September, Vukovar hosts the Ethno Fair. Our beautiful part of Croatia is home to superb gastronomy, but also to wonderful, hospitable people who offer emotion and experience, said Ivan Bosančić, prefect of Vukovar-Srijem County.
David Vlajčić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, called on all guests to support the September events across Vukovar-Srijem County by attending. This is the best our county has to offer. All our towns and municipalities, in cooperation with the Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County, have a great deal to give, the minister said. Majda Jakša, director of the Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County, added that she wants everyone to leave with the special emotion that tourists carry away after visiting a destination. We often like to say that here the homemade has no price, only emotion, she stressed.
The fine food was accompanied by the wines of Papak, Krešić and Dragun. Spirits ran high late into the night, nothing was lacking, because that is how it is done in Srijem and Slavonia — a destination that earlier this year earned the prestigious silver Green Destinations certificate. The Evening of Srijem and Slavonia was organised by Vukovar-Srijem County, the Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County, Agroklaster and the House of Croatian Food Crotaste. Here are a few more photographs that invite you to Srijem and Slavonia better than words can.
