Trnjak takes centre stage: a festival confirming the variety’s meteoric rise

At a time when many wine events compete on the number of exhibitors or the sheer quantity of labels on offer, Trnjak Fest in Ljubuški is building a different concept. Its value lies not merely in promoting wine, but in the systematic positioning of one indigenous variety as part of the identity of Herzegovina and the Dalmatian hinterland.

The festival’s fourth edition, held on 20 June 2026, showed once again that Trnjak is no longer a variety discussed only by a narrow circle of winemakers. Today it is a wine that draws the attention of oenologists, sommeliers, restaurateurs, tourism professionals and a growing number of wine lovers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the wider region. The programme was designed with exactly that goal — to connect science, production, gastronomy and a sense of destination into a single whole.

The festival was heralded by a number of events, among which two stand out: an excellent panel discussion devoted to a scientific view of the Trnjak variety and its tourism potential, and an exclusive tasting, the “Trnjak Masterclass”, led by Master Sommelier Stefan Neumann and our own esteemed expert Danijel Čečavac.

For decades Trnjak was primarily a variety in the service of others, but in recent years that has been changing rapidly. Trnjak is asserting its own character — defined by a powerful structure and the potential for serious ageing — and is increasingly mentioned among the most exciting reds of south-east Europe. There has been great progress not only in quality but in winemakers’ understanding of the variety. There is less stylistic wandering and more interpretation that draws out its best. Time and oak are its great allies, and when they are respected it shows at its finest, captivating with both power and elegance. The wines on show were mostly clean, technically well made and full of substance. Alongside the aged wines, one could also taste younger and simpler examples, rosés, and various blends in which Trnjak, as a fine “team player”, showed great potential to partner with other varieties. It was also noticeable how strongly it is shaped by terroir: across different sites Trnjak keeps its varietal character while taking on a specific typicity conditioned by microclimate and soil. Little more than a decade ago Trnjak was an unknown even to people in the trade; now we can say with certainty that, alongside Žilavka and Blatina, it has become a cornerstone of Herzegovinian winemaking.

At the evening part of the festival in Ljubuški’s town park, gastro exhibitors joined the winemakers, offering a cross-section of Herzegovinian and Dalmatian cuisine and confirming that Trnjak comes into its own in the company of food, people and an authentic atmosphere. The festival is thus no longer merely a wine event, but one that promotes an entire region through its flavours, customs and hospitality.

The cross-border dimension of Trnjak Fest also deserves mention. The variety naturally links western Herzegovina and the Dalmatian hinterland, and the festival turns that connection into concrete cooperation among winemakers while offering the public a complete insight into the grape.

The development of Trnjak Fest in just a few years shows this is a project with a clear vision that, with excellent organisation and strong attendance, has lived up to high expectations.

For Herzegovina, which has been building an ever-stronger international reputation as a wine destination, Trnjak Fest carries significance far beyond the festival programme itself.
