More than a thousand sparkling wines from 29 countries took part in the Sparkling Wines Session, a specialised judging that Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, one of the largest wine competitions in the world, staged this year in Moldova. La Belle Grand, a brut sparkling wine made from Grasevina (Welschriesling) and Pinot Blanc by our own winery Belje, took a silver medal. It is produced by the charmat method, meaning the second fermentation took place in tank. Secondary fermentation and ageing on the fine lees lasted three months. 
Champagnes, as expected, claimed the most honours: eleven of them carried off a Grand Gold medal. The best rated of all the wines entered was Authentique 2012 from the Maison Tribaut-Schloesser winery in the Brunet valley, between the celebrated sub-regions of the Marne and the Montagne de Reims. German sparklers won 14 medals. Grand Gold went to Fluxus 2017 from the family winery Bergdolt Klostergut, housed in the former monastery of St. Lamprecht in the Pfalz, a region renowned for its sensational dry Rieslings. This wine is made from the classic Champagne pairing of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. 
By number of medals won, next come Italy, with the Lombard sub-region of Franciacorta leading the way of course, followed by Spain and the host country. Moldovan sparkling wines won five gold and 16 silver medals. Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is a judging held in a different country each year. Besides the sessions specialised for individual wine styles, they also stage the full Concours, with some ten thousand wines. That edition came to Porec in 2023, and last year Split hosted the specialised Concours Mondial de Bruxelles judging for rose wines.
