The Amfora 365 Brut sparkling, 2018 by Plovanic vina won 90 points and a silver diploma (90 points) at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2025, and a further 11 bronze medals were won by wines of the Kvarner Wines Association members at the world’s most prestigious wine competition. These are Biser Zlahtina Brut 2023, Sansigot 2020 and Rose 2023 from the Ivan Katunar wine house, Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 and Zlahtina Sv. Duh 2022 from Gospoja Winery, 1288 Brut 2019, Zlahtina 2024 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 from Pavlomir winery, Belica MI2 2022 by Plovanic vina, Zlatna Vrbnicka Zlahtina 2024 by PZ Vrbnik and Malvazija 2023 by Vina Mandic.
Today we mark a success that did not come by chance. It is the result of many years of work, investment and perseverance by the people who stand behind every bottle of wine. We are especially pleased that it is precisely the wines of Kvarner that have been recognised at the most prestigious international competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards, and at the newly launched Kvarner International Wine Trophy in Vrbnik. These are distinctions that confirm Kvarner wines are becoming an ever more significant brand, not only in Croatia but in the world. Our goal is simple: to provide the support that will make this excellence not the exception but the rule. Dear winemakers, you are the ambassadors of Kvarner, European Region of Gastronomy 2026, and through your wines people around the world have the chance to taste our climate, our soil, our way of life. On behalf of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, I thank you for that and wish you many more silver and gold diplomas, but even more satisfied guests who will recognise the quality and authenticity of Kvarner wine, said Ivica Lukanovic, prefect of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
The Kvarner Tourist Board has for more than 30 years systematically developed and supported the region’s eno-gastronomic story as one of the key reasons guests visit. We are especially proud of our cooperation with the Kvarner Wines Association, which gained additional momentum in 2021 through the founding of the joint Kvarner Wines brand. Since then we have recorded a series of successful appearances at fairs and presentations, as well as a significant rise in wine quality, confirmed by numerous international awards, including over 60 medals from the prestigious Decanter competition. All this further positions Kvarner as a leading eno-gastronomic destination that rightly holds the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2026. I am extremely proud of the awards won by Kvarner wines, from our own international judging, the Kvarner International Wine Trophy in Vrbnik, to the world’s most prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards. First and foremost I am proud of the fact that the vast majority of the awards came for wines from Kvarner’s indigenous grape varieties, which is a message to us winemakers to keep working and to keep expanding vineyards planted with indigenous grape varieties. Sending wine to be judged in order to confirm the quality of a product is one of the three main marketing tools for communicating and positioning a brand. I believe our new projects Quarner Quality and Kvarner Wines Route will contribute to that as well. For the best wines from Decanter we are also preparing a catalogue for the HoReCa market with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, announced Anton Brusic, president of the Kvarner Wines Association.
The Kvarner Wines Association submitted the project of application and presentation at the Decanter World Wine Awards competition for co-financing under the public call of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for co-financing the organised appearance of Croatian businesses at major international fairs and competitions abroad in 2025, and most of the costs will be co-financed in this way.
