For the first time, Croatia, in Varazdin, has hosted the Sauvignon Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, the world’s most relevant competition dedicated to the Sauvignon Blanc variety, at which, from 7 to 9 April, 55 judges from 23 countries will assess over 1,000 wines. Samples arrived from as many as 25 countries, and it is especially pleasing that 11% of all entered wines come from Croatia, which is slowly becoming internationally recognised for its style and quality when it comes to this variety.
It is only logical that most of our sauvignons come from Bregovita Hrvatska (Upland Croatia), which is also the partner of this major event. Sauvignon is one of the most significant varieties of Upland Croatia, so this will be an ideal opportunity for our winemakers to revisit and further consolidate their position on the global stage. This year’s edition of the Sauvignon Selection is a chance to present new initiatives developed by the CMB, aimed at providing additional support to the wine industry.
Data gathered during the judging will be used to create concrete marketing tools such as sensory profiles and aroma wheels, which will help producers better understand the market and consumer preferences. New accolades and certificates have also been introduced, further highlighting and promoting quality wines.
“We have launched CMB MERIT. It is not a medal, but a recognition designed to highlight high-quality wines that did not reach the top 33% required to win a medal, yet nonetheless deserve market recognition. We have also introduced a certification, CMB Experience Certified, which distinguishes wine bars and restaurants that offer at least five CMB medal-winning wines on their wine list, and the first certified venues are in South Korea and Spain,” explained Quentin Havaux, executive director of Vinopres, which runs the competition. Alongside the judging itself, the programme includes professional workshops, presentations and a series of gastronomic and cultural events, through which the many guests will gain an authentic insight into the Croatian eno-gastro scene.
